Carson would joke he wasn't the best drummer, (I knew one of his writers) but his passion for music was boundless. Anyone in L.A. knows the jazz station 88.1 KLON. Carson was a massive contributor to that station purely for his love of jazz.
On a side note, I almost took a lesson with Ed Shaughnessy (spelling?). He was one of the sweetest men I ever spoke to. Our schedules conflicted, but we traded drummer jokes like we'd known each other for years, even though we only had one phone conversation.

Groovemeister, to put it in perspective Johnny hosted a show that was on the air for 30 years. He was a funny guy, always laughing, joking, and unfortunately smoking. Emphysema ultilmately killed him. Seeing him so often as I grew up and finding out he'd died was a little like having a distant, but fond relative pass away.
He regularly featured musicians and had Buddy Rich on the show many, many times (I must have seen him on it a dozen times) all before there were many drum vids. He was a drummer, a lifelong fan of the instrument, and made it possible for many American drummers to see one of the greats (Buddy, Louie, and many others, etc.) every couple of months. Plus, he had Ed Shaunessey as the house drummer every night.
He'll be greatly missed.

I remember seeing Roli Garcia Jr. come out and play his huge Remo kit on the TS, and I remember seeing Sheila E. play a solo on a bright pink Yamaha double bass kit.
"Uh, I did not KNOW that."

There will NEVER be another Johnny Carson. I had the priviledge of playing behind him on a concert tour back in the mid 70's. Backstage he was as shy and aloof as everyone says. But he took the time to talk to me (Johnny was a drummer who loved drums). It was a short conversation--Johnny shared with me his love of drums and numerous drummers (especially Buddy Rich). As I look back, that is one of my very best memories. I mourn his passing and pray that God will comfort all his family and friends with "the peace that passes all understanding."

Now that you mention that, ben, I first saw another young drummer on there also, several times; a kid [ATT] named, I believe, Jacob Arman Berbershian?...anyone rem this? Whatever became of him...
Anyway, Johnny did help jumpstart many a career, ESP comedians...who have to have one of the hardest professions in the world [then comes pro musician, next [img]wink.gif[/img] ]...
